What is in a Name?

Did you know that the gospel of Matthew was originally written in Hebrew? It’s true. Scholars have concluded by various evidences that Hebrew was the language of the gospels just as it was for the Old Testament. Case in point, in Matthew 1:21, Joseph is told to name the baby Jesus because He will save His people. This does not make sense until you take it back to Hebrew. Then it says you will name Him Yeshua (or God saves) for He will yoshia (or save) His people. Hear the play on words?

The name of Jesus or Yeshua uses a shortened form of God’s name Yehovah taking the first two letters of his name pronounced yah and adding the Hoshea literally saying Yehovah saves. That is why Yeshua is the only name by which men must be saved. It is His very name. This Christmas remember that God sent us salvation and it is only by Him that we can be saved.
