It is Time for Chirstian Broadcasting to Step Up

It amazes me that simple common sense principles need to be scientifically proven. But here we go. A new study conducted by UCLA political scientist Tim Groseclose reveals something very surprising. It turns out that listening or watching news with a liberal bias develops, get this, a liberal bias. It turns out that what you consume is what you become or garbage in, garbage out.

Scripture teaches the things we look upon form our worldview. We must also understand that the secular media is not doing us or the Lord any favors in their reporting of the news or the information they give us in documentaries and certainly in the entertainment we consume. But is Christian broadcasting filling the void? Sadly, it is not. There is not much in Christian news. While there is a half hearted attempt made by a few, the truth is that a lot of Christian broadcasting is limited to the Jim and Tammy Baker format or the recordings of popular preachers in their churches.

It is time for Christian media to step out of the 80’s and step up to the challenge of the truth. Just take a look at what you find when you search the so called Christian channels. In New Mexico, we have two stations, KCHF and KAZQ. Neither station has any more news than the same 700 club being played on these two stations in standard format, while the local secular station plays it in HD. There is very little locally produced programing to challenge anyone’s thinking.

On KAZQ the afternoon line up includes Daniel Boone, Little House on the Prairie, The Andy Griffith Show and Hogan’s Heroes. While these were great shows in their day, the newest of them is over 30 years old. There is a lot of local talent that could help give kids a biblical worldview and many that could create excellent programing on the thinnest of dimes, but the stations are unwilling to step up to the challenge.

Secular news and entertainment is hard at work telling us we can live however we like as long as it feels right in our heart. Where is Christian broadcasting telling us that this is a lie, that the heart is deceitfully wicked and sinful? Our kids are being taught what is good is evil and what is evil is good by well done children’s networks like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. The Food Network puts out better programing than Christian channels. People are getting their biblical point of view from the History Channel and their documentaries instead of true biblical archeologists on the NRB. Word network is not putting out much more that preaching and their number of viewers show it, where is a well done documentary on where we got the bible?

While I’m at it. These stations and networks need to re-examine their business models. The church is meant to be funded by tithes and offerings. Christian broadcasting would be much more successful if they would operate like a business, instead of a pseudo church. They would be better able to upgrade equipment and facilities and avoid scandals.

We can do better that what is be done today, there is some programming that rises to the top and there are people of vision trying to improve what is being produced. But it is time to step up our game. We should not be satisfied with the status quo. The green agenda has better programing than we do. The same sex people are doing a better job with their channel than we do. Certainly, our Lord Jesus Christ would have us do better that what we are doing.
